D87 has spent over $150,000,000 in the last 12 years, is sitting on over $100,000,000 in cash and it has not already made needed “safety and security improvements."
With the increase in school shootings and recent bomb threats, this is completely irresponsible.
The district recently stated in a public meeting that the referendum will not have a direct impact on learning. We need to focus on improving our children’s educational performance. The district has spent more per student than most other districts across the county, yet its educational performance is abysmal. As of last year only 40.2% of D87 students met or exceeded S.A.T. standards in English language and only 37.5% were proficient in Mathematics. This is a steady decline over the past 8 years.
D87 has seen nearly an 8% decline in enrollment in the last 8 years. No money is being spent on the teachers or curriculum where it matters the most. 2015 enrollment was 8288 students, 2023 enrollment was 7703 students = 585 fewer students. 585 students x 20-24k per student saved the district approximately $10-12 million dollars in expenses.
